Hunker down

Having lived in Houston for the past few years, I have made quite a few friends in the city. So now that a hurricane is bee-lining for my friends and family... I am less than excited. I have talked to most of my friends (or read their blogs) and it seems most of my dear friends are "hunkering down" in H-town to ride out the storm.

The educational portion of today's post: I did not know what hunkering down actually meant... I mean I had a general idea, but I had to look it up to know for sure... So without delay, I will grace you all with the knowledge that I now possess thanks to thefreedictionary.com:

Hun´ker down
v.
1.
to crouch or squat; to sit on one's haunches.
2.
to settle in at a location for an extended period; - also (figuratively) to maintain a position and resist yielding to some pressure, as of public opinion.
3.
to take shelter, literally or figuratively; to assume a defensive position to resist difficulties.
While many businessmen were
hunkering down for another bust after the lean years of the Second World War and the Great Depression before it, Taylor and company correctly reckoned it was the dawn of an era of prosperity and growth.
- Richard Siklos [Shades of Black, 1995]

My cousin Jacki, her husband and their two kids are also staying in Houston. Jacki is a nurse so she may have to report for duty before the hurricane hits. I am really hopeful that she gets to stay with the kids during the worst of the storm. Jessica is almost two and a half and will not understand why her mom is not there when she gets scared... My brother is coming into Dallas as we speak. He is new to H-town and has never been through a hurricane... so he figured, why start now.

I was planning on going to Houston this weekend for a wedding, but am staying in Dallas now. The wedding has been postponed until next weekend. I can't even imagine postponing a wedding (my prayers are with you Bonnie)!

I am glued to the news too and am praying for all of my beloved friends and family in Houston! Hunker down guys, hunker down!

Thanks! The definition has helped. I think Colby is starting to get the idea.

Much love to you!

After hearing this phrase about 10 billion times over the last day from reporters and friends, I'm very glad to know its origin and meaning now. Thanks!
