Done!!!!

I'm done! I'm done! I'm done! I am relieved, exhausted, drained, exhilarated, worried, and proud. Now the waiting begins. I don't get my results until November. But at least it is out of my hands now!

I am having steak tonight with Mel and David, meeting Micah and catching up with Abby tomorrow morning, seeing Mel's wedding dress and shopping with Mel tomorrow afternoon, driving home to Dallas, going to a party at Brian and Elaine's tomorrow night then maybe meeting up with my brother and cousin for a few hours. When I finally get home tomorrow night (or Saturday morning) I am packing for 2 weeks in Hawaii!!!! Then on Saturday I am waking up and seeing Jacki and the kids before I head to the airport (I can sleep on the plane, haha)!!! My schedule is jammed packed with fellowship and fun again!!! I could not be happier!!!

Thanks so much for all of your prayers! I could not have made it without you. The last two days were quite brutal but I did not throw up again, praise Jesus!

The Storm Before The Calm

I don't want to take to much time to blog, but I just wanted to tell you all I am 20% done with the bar exam! I completed the Civil & Criminal Procedure & Evidence Exam and the Multistate Performance Test. I am very glad they are over and I don't want to talk about them! They are over... that is what matters. Now on to the Multistate Bar Exam (200 multiple choice questions) tomorrow and the Texas Essays (12 essays) on Thursday. Be praying guys!

About 100 blogworthy things happened today, but I will only mention three. 1- One of the proctors was yelling at us at the top of his lungs several times throughout the exam. I wanted to tell him to calm down. We should be stressed NOT HIM.
2- A girl taking the exam raised her hand while the exams were being collected after the first test and proceeded to yell at the examiner about how some people were getting up to go to the restroom and he had not told us we could. She mentioned something about how if some people can do it shouldn't we all be able to. I don't really know exactly why she wanted to yell but I felt embarrassed for her... Though I doubt she will appreciate the sentiment because she clearly was not embarrassed for herself.
3- The exam room was crazy cold and the proctors managed to make everything two times more complicated and time consuming then necessary as always (I am glad they are so thorough... I would hate for my exam to be lost, so keep on being diligent examiners! I just may briefly complain about it, if that is alright).... But the good news is ONE DAY DOWN!!!!

Lastly, and this one is where the post got its title... Please be praying for me tonight and tomorrow night that I would sleep well. I tend to have rather severe test anxiety that I can't seem to control in my sleep. During my first semester of law school, I woke up every semester throwing up the morning before a big exam and I did it again last night. I am able to control my anxiety while I am awake and actually am quite calm by the exam itself, but while sleeping is another story. Please pray that I would sleep well the next two nights and not wake up throwing up (gross I know, but at least you are not the one who does it)! I managed to sleep well until 1am and after 2:30am this morning, which is a huge praise! But I did not enjoy 1-2:30 very much. I doubt I will throw up again because I can already tell I am a lot less stressed than I was yesterday, but prayer couldn't hurt! Thanks!

Watermark

Drum roll please... I have decided to join Watermark Community Church and hope to begin leading with the youth group in the Fall! I have been going to Watermark for the past two months and finally checked out the Youth Group this Sunday and it is PHENOMENAL. These kids have no idea how blessed they are. The facilities are AMAZING and the leadership seems grounded in the truth and fun (which is so important for the kids). I am already getting excited about leading! I have missed my girls so much this summer (email and phone calls just aren't the same) and I really would love to be investing in girls lives again! It is going to be nice to have a place to meet people too! I met one of Mel's friends from college (Sarah) and one of my friends from high school's best friend (Lindsay) today. So it is a crazy small world and I already have a few friends! Woohoo!

I am headed to Houston tomorrow to take the bar! I am as ready as I will ever be and just so excited to get it over with. This summer has been a blur of studying that I very much hope I don't have to repeat (God will get me through it if I have to take it again, but I am praying I get it done the first time). I am ready to have a reason to get up and do my hair and make up again. I am ready not to sit down in front of a book and not look up again until five hours later! I am ready to catch up with all of my friends and hear everything about their lives that I have only heard the cliffnotes of. I am ready to go to Hawaii! I am ready not to feel guilty for taking a break. :) Yeah, I am ready for the bar to be over!!! Five days until I have my life back! I can't wait!

Please be praying!!!

My Thoughts and Observations

1. For those of you who have been worried about me, or even better have been praying for me, my productivity has improved since Sunday. Thank you. Several of my soon-to-be-lawyer friends also posted about their lack of motivation on Sunday so there must have been something in the air!
2. A week from now I will be almost half way through the bar. Crazy! I am not ready but I don't think you can ever really be "ready". I know a great deal more than I did seven weeks ago. I pray I know enough! Mainly, I pray that they ask me questions that I do know the answers to!
3. I went to Starbucks on the way into the library today and it was packed! I go to Starbucks a great deal less than most of my friends. I have only been four or five times this summer and always at an "off-peak" hour. The longest line I have ever seen at Starbucks is two or three people. Well, today the drive through line was crowded so I figured I would go inside to beat the rush. Much to my surprise the line inside was just as long. I was in shock (I know you all are thinking clearly I don't go to Starbucks much, haha). I have to get used to this rush hour thing! I have not really done "working hours" before (other than every summer for the last six years) and I have not been to Starbucks in the morning before... I was not prepared for the insane line... Obviously I have a lot to learn! But my venti-iced-soy-green-tea-latte was worth it.
4. The parking lot at the library was also packed today. I got the LAST spot. It is never this crowded. There must be a seminar going on somewhere. I am just glad I got a spot! I would have hated not to be able to study today because the library was full. That would have been a tragedy. ;)

Alright, time to study the day away. Six days to the Bar.

I Hit A Wall

Today I have been almost completely unproductive. I cannot seem to focus. Nothing important or significant has happened, but apparently there is a limit to how many days I can study in a row. The bar is only 9 days away... Which should send me into a panic and cause me to bury my head in a book, not to re-emerge until meal time (I mean, that is what I have done every day recently)... but today... nope.

No panicked studying... just nausea and a lack of motivation. I would freak out except I am fairly confident my body and brain need a break. I still have 8 days to go. I cannot burn out now. Fittingly, today is the Sabbath... apparently I am treating it as such. :P Hopefully by the time you read this I will be back to productivity... But in an effort to fully document my studying process, I was compelled to post about my unproductivity. I don't recommend sitting and half-heartedly studying nine days before the bar, and "vegging" was probably not what I would have chosen if I had planned in advance to take the day off, but it is what it is.

In other and more exciting news, my mother is making me gingerbread tonight to spur on my productivity. I LOVE gingerbread. It is my FAVORITE. Christmas in July! Woohoo! My mom is the best! Please pray for my productivity for the next week plus. I hope to finish strong!

Change of Scenery

For the last four days I have been studying in the basement of the Richardson Public Library in group study rooms with a few of my friends. It has worked quite well for me and we have only taken a few "conversation" breaks. Today, however I needed my cell phone to function (it does not work in the basement) in case my parents call me. They are coming back from Vegas today (which means I am no longer in charge of watching the dog) and they may or may not need me to pick them up from the airport. My brother is supposed to pick them up but apparently he blew out a tire on the way home from Houston yesterday and there is something wrong with some air system or something in his car. Thus, I need to be by my phone in case he cannot get them and as a result I cannot live in the basement/dungeon today.

I decided to try studying at a table on the third floor and so far, I like it! I can see outside. There is a window! I forgot what the world looked like over the last few days and it is kinda nice to see it in between my studying. I don't know how well it is going to work long term because there are people moving around constantly and there is a loud and constant screeching noise (I am thinking it is the air conditioner) but for the last 25 minutes my spirits have been lifted by the presence of light and the glimpse of the world outside! I missed you sun! It is good to see you again.

Congratulations Abby and Nate!

Micah is here! I could not be more excited!!! Meeting him is my incentive to getting through the next two weeks. Abby, I hope you don't mind but I plan to come and see him at some point on August 1st. I am making my reservation in advance! You pick when, and I will be there. :P

Studying is getting easier now that I am in a sheer panic mode. I am not taking many breaks these days and I am just so ready for it all to be over. I am plagued with fears that I am going to fail and have to retake the bar. There is just so much to know! I can't possibly fit it all in my head so I am learning what I can and hoping for the questions I can nail! I am taking a study break (well I will be studying during commercials, but it still counts as a break) tonight to watch SYTYCD. I have not watched any TV this week so it is my treat!

As an aside, with all the joy in so many of the lives surrounding me (babies, engagements and trips), I am finding my daily routine a little difficult, a.k.a. studying all the time is hard. The good news is all the excitement is helping me keep first things first and I realize how un-eternal the bar is. The bad news, I wish I could trade places with just about EVERYONE! Let me plan your wedding, let me take care of your precious little son, I will go on your vacation or mission trip for you and YOU take the bar! What do you think? Any takers?!?!

Congratulations Mel and David

Yesterday two of my very good friends got engaged and I could not be more excited for them!!! Congratulations Mel and David!!! As for how he proposed, hopefully Mel will post about it (no pressure).

I went to Houston today with Allison and Bob (two of Mel's best friends growing up... well technically her best friend and her best friend's brother). I got a little bit of studying done on the way (but when I wasn't studying, it was a good study break). It was great seeing Mel and David and a few of my other friends. It made me miss having a life! Two and a half weeks and counting! Congratulations again Mel and David!

Bye-Bye Security Blanket

I finished my last BarBri class today. No more waking up and riding DART downtown to sit thorough endless lectures. I should be thrilled (and I am for the most part) but the Bar is only a few days away. I am on my own to study for the next 18 days and I am very freaked out. Most of you think I will pass the bar and while your confidence is comforting... I am not so sure I will pass and I am very freaked out!

I have not managed to study well this week. I don't know if it all the emotion or a general lack of motivation but either way, this week studying has been almost non-existent. I am hoping to increase my stamina with a quick workout and then I am hoping to hit the books hard tonight. Afterwards I hope to follow BarBri's Morning, Afternoon, and Evening schedule. I am praying I can get everything done in time! So much to do in the next three weeks. Pray for me!

Stress = Pounds

I am not sure if my metabolism quit working all together when I turned twenty-five or if it is stress related, but I have gained 10 pounds since I have been in Dallas. TEN!

Honestly, this normally would not freak me out. My weight fluctuates five to ten pounds in any given month and my clothes always fit, so I generally could care less... Except I am home with my parents, eating their diet food, and gaining weight. And, as noted in my posts throughout the summer, I am working out quite often. I like to think my weight gain is all of my fat turning to muscle, but I fear that is not the case.

Most of you are probably going to throw stones at me when you hear this next part, but stress normally makes me lose weight. In law school, I would lose around 5 pounds while studying for finals. I never changed my eating habits, but my body seemed to super process food when I was studying (or maybe it just didn't process it) but either way... I lost weight. Over my month and a half of studying and stressing over the Bar (as opposed to 1 to 2 weeks when studying for finals) my body has decided to change tactics. It appears to be storing up all the fat it can take in because it knows I am about to freak out and go into super study mode... Which up till how has always meant weight loss.

Body... I am on to your tricks and I do not approve. I am interested to see if I continue to gain weight once I am studying on my own and in control of my destiny or if I will continue to reach new heights on the scale. (Disclaimer: I know I am thin. I know I am healthy. I am not any bigger than I was when I was 10 pounds lighter (which incidentally was right after finals and a 5 pound weight loss) and all of my clothes fit. I am not worried about my weight, but I do think it is funny that I gained weight while eating healthier than I have ever eaten... got to love the irony.)

I have two more days of BarBri and then the fun begins. After Thursday I go into what BarBri likes to call the "self-study" portion of the review. They break our days into Morning, Afternoon, and Evening sessions and we have no days off between this Friday and the Bar. I am thrilled (sarcasm), but it is a necessary evil because I am no where near ready for the bar and it is THREE WEEKS AWAY!

I fear I will have no more "study break" posts between now and the bar. Feel free to check in on me though if you are interested in hearing about my sanity (or quite possibly a lack there of), my studying, my workouts (and potential water-bottle throwing incidents), and maybe my weight should it chose to make any more roller-coaster turns. The bar is an interesting thing... I don't think I could every adequately put it into words... If you have been through it, you understand. If not, be thankful!

As far as how my family is doing, we are getting by. The funeral is tomorrow at 10am and will probably be quite difficult for my family and George's. Thank you so much for all of your prayers and encouragement. It means the world to me and my family!

At A Loss

I am at a loss for words. I am overcome with emotion and yet have found no viable outlet. My family is changed forever, and yet we must go on with daily life and continue to function. I am left feeling raw and this post is very real. Read at your own risk.

On Thursday, July 3rd my father's best friend George died in a motorcycle accident. He was 64 years old and is survived by three children, many friends, and the Lewis family. He and my father grew up together in Miami, Oklahoma and were childhood friends. They remained in contact throughout the years but George did not become a daily staple in our lives until he moved to Dallas seven years ago. He taught Middle School and High School Social Studies in Oklahoma and New Mexico until he was eligible for retirement and then moved to Dallas and began teaching in DISD.

Once he moved, he and my father were inseparable. In fact, odds are if you came to my house anytime in the last seven years, you would not only have met my parents, but you also would have met George. He ate dinner with my family almost every night, he helped my dad mow the lawn, he helped my brother and I move multiple times, he came to our graduations, he attended our family holidays, and our families vacationed together. He was not only welcome in my family, he was a part of my family. In the month plus that I have lived in Dallas, I had only eaten at home with my parents once when George wasn't there. Now, when we eat I cannot help feeling a void.

It is alarming how quickly your life can change forever. I still have not begun to wrap my head around it but I am certain it is the little things I will miss the most. George was one of the kindest, gentlest people I had the pleasure of knowing. He would have done anything for my family but beyond that, he would have done anything to help a stranger. He loved my father with a deep friendship that I aspire to mimic in my own relationships. My brother and I used to joke that my parents were not "empty nesters" because they had George. He thought it was funny and it was by no means an insult. My mom prepared meals for him but my parents by no means took care of him. He was very independent but enjoyed my parents company and they enjoyed his. To both my parents, he was a companion and by no means a charity case. He (like everyone) had idiosyncrasies, but I may miss his quirks most of all. George could not stand silence. Ever. He would talk when he had something to say but if there was a silence, he would talk just to fill it. This took some getting used to in my family, who (for the most part) only speaks when we have something significant to say (I portray this characteristic least of all, but I can assure you the remainder of my family (barring my half-sister and sometimes myself) is quite introspective and cautious with their speech). He was insanely liberal with his salad dressing and his salt and we went through both at about three times the normal rate. He would always have a pool of salad dressing at the bottom of his bowl (enough for another salad) and yet never realized he should pour less. I used to joke with my parents about putting the dressing in his salad for him to insure he used the right amount but they never did. My parents always figured, if he wanted to drench his salad, he had every right. Who were we to judge. Now, I only wish he were still here to waste salad dressing. George, you were deeply loved and will be deeply missed.

As I sat down to write this post, I didn't know where to begin. Something about putting it on "paper" makes it seem so final... but the truth is it is final either way. I also was struck by the fact that I have not had to write a post like this before. I have lost three grandparents and a great aunt that I was close to in my lifetime, but none of which since I have been blogging. I was blessed by knowing that no one I am close to has died in the last three years, but I also know that this will not be my last post about loss, which is one of the scariest thoughts of all. Knowing that death is a part of life does not make dealing with it any easier. But death is meant to give us a since of urgency. We are not to take anything for granted, after all we are only promised today. I hate mourning but every time I mourn I am reminded to live life to the fullest. It is fleeting and goes by in an instant. I so desperately want to live a life that ends with "well done my good and faithful servant." I am in the process of grieving a dear friend but am thankful for the reminder of the fragility of life and to keep first things first.

So please, pray for George's family (his three children are Gary, Greg and Melanie and they are all in their 30's), my family and George's friends but most of all, don't take your own life for granted.

Congratulations Graduate!

Today I am officially a law school graduate! That's right ladies and gentlemen, I FINALLY got my last grade and since it was a passing one, my diploma can now be processed and sent! Woohoo! The frame has been very lonely.

As for why I am so late in reporting my graduation, my teacher got sick and thus was unable to grade our exams. I hear she is doing better and that is all that matters. But it is nice to know I did not walk across that stage in vain.
