Red River, New Mexico

In early June, my community group (sans Leanne) went to Red River, New Mexico for a little get away.  It was amazingly beautiful and such a refreshing time away.  I really needed it!

We went hiking.

The water was RIDICULOUSLY cold!

By far my favorite part of the entire trip was white water rafting.  I had never been before and I LOVED it so very much.  I think a smile was plastered across my face every second of it.  Well, except for when I fell in the water.  I wasn’t smiling much then.

The survivors

Alex, Katie, and I fell into the river while going through a mile long level 3 rapid. I remember our guide telling us we were coming upon the longest rapid on the course. He said it was a level 3 rapid and that we were going to go through it backwards. The next thing I know, I am in the water. I don’t remember falling in. I don’t know if we hit a rock or what. I came up for air and quickly turned around so I was facing down-river. As I was trying to stay above water, I noticed that Katie and Alex were in the river with me. The river is so much faster when you are out of the raft. The force of the water is crazy. I am a strong swimmer but it really didn’t matter. I was at the mercy of the water. Before long, I caught up to a kayak and held on for dear life. Within minutes, we were out of the rapids and I was being hoisted onto a raft. Alex was lifted on right after me. Katie ended up back on our raft. We met back up with our raft and Alex and I got back on.

Katie apparently was almost smashed against a rock and at one point a raft went over her. Which sounds awful.  I am so thankful nothing worse happened to us!  Katie lost a shoe and her glasses and we all had some scrapes and bruises, but other than that we survived.  And despite my little swim, I am hooked on white water rafting.  I CANNOT WAIT to go again!!!

So much fun!!! I love white water rafting. You're iffy, falling in isn't only freezing, the speed of the water is crazy!
