Multistate Professional Responsiblity Examination
That's right ladies and gentlemen, this weekend I began studying the ethics of lawyering. I am taking the MPRE on March 8th and am in the processing of "learning" the model rules of professional conduct and their application. I must pass this test before I can be admitted to the Texas bar. Thus, for the next few weeks I fear I will be vacant from blogsville (other than posting about the 10k I am participating in this weekend... My first one... I am SO EXCITED). Please pray for me as I try to juggle work, school, studying for this exam and friends. I think the next two weeks will be a brief glimpse into what studying for the Bar is going to be like... and I am scared!!!
If anyone is wondering what sort of information is on the MPRE, here are a few random tid-bits:
- An attorney cannot co-mingle their funds with their client's funds
- Attorneys cannot draft documents (like wills) in which the client gives the lawyer or his relatives a substantial gift, except when the client is a relative.
- An attorney may withdraw from representation for any reason if withdrawal does not have a material adverse effect on client's interest or the client consents.
- Contrary to what you may see on TV, sexual relationships with clients that are not pre-existing to the representation are subject to discipline.
This by no means scratches the surface of what I have to learn, but I included some of the more interesting rules. I am sure you are riveted. I bet you are wishing you could take the MPRE too. Haha!

I like the use of the term "co-mingle"... like we don't know what they're really saying :P Well, I'm glad I get to see you at the wedding this weekend, otherwise it would have been WAY too long!
